Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba - a short distance away - are
beautifully preserved heritage villages with a rich history
stemming from gold discoveries in the local area in the 19th
century.
Alluvial and reef gold was discovered on nearby Gulaga -
Mount Dromedary in the late 1800s which led to a gold mining
boom in the early 1900s. The twin villages of Tilba Tilba
and Central Tilba flourished during this time.
The dairy industry, once important to the economy of the
area, is now represented by the award winning ABC Cheese Factory
at Central Tilba.
The villages are now classified by the National Trust and
are identified as one of Australia’s top 20 heritage
sites |
